Information security during war

March 16th is freedom of information day. So, today’s post is a list of rules and tips from the The Ministry of Culture and Information Policy of Ukraine on Information security in these challenging times.

Let’s hold the ranks in the information space. The goal of the aggressor is to spread panic, ours is to stay calm and not to react to provocations.

1. Consume information from official sources only!

The most widespread FAKES:

  • Any declarations about “capitulation”.
  • A link from the Security Service of Ukraine asking the Ukrainians to “pass a security check”.
  • Information that all phone calls are going to be recorded and listened to.
  • Requirement to turn off all the electrical appliances at night to reduce the power supply.
  • Order of the Ministry of Health Protection about evacuation. These are spread by the occupiers to use civilians as a “human shield”.

2. Don't help the enemy!

  • Do not spread information about the relocation of Ukrainian troops.
  • No numbers and terms concerning our military and technical equipment.
  • No numbers of parts and types of military troops.
  • Don’t show vehicle numbers or license plates in photos or videos even for 1 sec.
  • No names of officers, officials or bloggers at hot spots or at geographically distant locations.
  • No road signs with geographical names, distances and directions to rivers or tourist destinations.
  • Do not show signs of identification – bandages on arms or labels on transport.
  • Do not give information about places crowded with people.
  • Do not stream videos of battlefield, bombing or shelling at the moment of the event.
  • Do not share unverified information about the combat situation.

3. If you notice the enemy or other suspicious individuals that can:

  • have clear Russian accent;
  • don’t know the local area;
  • take photos/videos of the area;
  • put any tags;
  • ask for a mobile phone to make a call.

What to do:

  • Remember their features (clothing, appearance).
  • Never take photos / videos of these people. This can be dangerous!
  • Do not show them documents, do not show the way.
  • Do not give the phone to call, and if there is no possibility to refuse, then record the number they called.
  • In all available ways, inform the Security Service of Ukraine about the time and place where you saw the alleged saboteurs, as well as their number, the content of the conversation, numbers, color and brand of cars, direction, etc.

Report immediately:

  • to the official SИU Telegram chatbot https://t.me/stoprussianwarbot @stop_russian_war_bot
  • to the contact numbers of the Territory Defense in your region or by phone 102
  • If there are representatives of the defense or law enforcement – try to detain the saboteurs. You should do this only if you are confident in your abilities and have a numerical advantage over the enemy.

Слава Україні!
