November 6 is International Day for Preventing the Exploitation of the Environment in War and Armed Conflict. That’s why we’d like to raise this very important issue of environmental damage in war today.
182,880 m2 of soil is contaminated with hazardous substances;
2,365,129 m2 of land is littered with the remains of destroyed objects and ammunition;
680,618 tons of petroleum products burned during the shelling, polluting the air with dangerous substances;
23,286 hectares of forest were burned by rockets and shelling. Some of them may be restored within ten or more years. The others are lost permanently;
7,155,689 m2 of objects of infrastructure were destroyed, causing damage to the environment around them.
At minimum, the value of the damage is 441 billion uah. While the damage to the environment may seem less significant to some people, among peoples’ lives destroyed, this issue is still or utter importance. This is our beautiful land, our generous fields and incredible forests suffering from the effects of war. We’ve all walked on them since we were kids and our own children will, unfortunately, have to deal with the consequences of the destruction. That’s why we want to stress the importance of exploitation of the environment in war.
