Freelancer Opinion

on Upwork Project

Catalog

Last October Upwork introduced the beta version of Project Catalog.

Freelancers main response was that:

  1. It reminded them of Fiverr. Project Catalog seems to copy the Fiverr business model. Probably it was Upwork intention in the first place.
  2. They wanted a way to communicate with the client beforehand or add additional content. Some even said that there was absolutely no way they would allow a contract to be automatically created without vetting the client, understanding their needs, and reviewing the material.

Starting last week, ProjectCatalog is officially introduced as a "powerful new revenue stream" allowing Upworkers to spend more time doing the work they love and less finding it.

So, let's briefly explain what it is.

  • Clients can browse through the catalog of projects, created and defined by freelancers.
  • When a client clicks “Buy”, the work starts automatically after he provides the required materials for the freelancer to begin.
  • When the work is done and the client approves, the freelancer gets paid like in a normal fixed contract.

We think that while the catalog may be useful for small and medium projects, it is not clear how it could work with larger work.
